I begin each day that I am home sitting quietly in my backyard. It is my meditation. What about this space causes me to reflect? I know it is more than the objects contained within it, the trees, flowers and potted plants, yet that is how I have always photographed it.
Impressionists understand that our emotional response to a scene comes from our immediate perception of its colors, textures, light, before our mind’s eye filters them into preconceived forms and judgments. Photography that seeks to capture these unfiltered perceptions is called "contemplative." This series is a challenge to myself to expand my vision and appreciation of my backyard in this way: to see, as they are, the colors, textures, light and patterns that are the essence of this sanctuary.
